Upcoming Submission Deadlines – February 2021
compiled by Samia Mohammed
As January ends and with it the hopes of what was known as 2020 fades away, submission calls are announced for the upcoming February in hopes of reigniting a writer’s creativity. From a collection of poetries to shorts, there are a range of submissions from agencies and publishing houses. This is done through being read blind, where past experiences play no roles, where a prompt is often provided. I made a list (along with links) for places they can submit their collection of poetry.
La Piccioletta Barca
Deadline: February 1st 2021
La Piccioletta Barca are known mostly for the display of fiction and poetry where their opening mission statement is; nowadays, the value of art is often appraised relative to how much impact it has in other fields. With a clear appreciation for the arts, they encourage a range of genres. They even added a humble brag in their mission statement (which I humbly respect) on the work they received ranging from unpublished student works to Pulitzer Prize winning journalists.
The Ndebele art of house painting is the title of the upcoming submission. The style in writing will be on poetry. The prompt is on Stimulus where the deadline is set on February 1st 2021 and the publication date is on February 7th 2021.
La Piccioletta Barca – Issue 29 – 48 Hour Response Submissions
Broken Sleep Books
Submission Date: 1st January – 28th January 2021
Broken Sleep Books are upfront about their small workforce but look at this as their strong suit as they hold no preference to one particular type of work and are instead interested in the broad spectrum of writing. They encourage LGBTQ+, working-class writers and BAME writers to submit their work and even admit their dislike towards misogynistic and other forms of being an outright ‘dickhead’ (their words which I unashamedly approve of).
Throughout february, writers can submit a collection of poetrys. There is no prompt but writers must submit at least a minimum of 40 pages and over. Their submission page lays out the guidelines to aid the writers in what they need to do. The expected format and the email.
For those who want feedback, Broken Sleep Books offer the use of their editorial service which will need to be paid for.
Butcher’s Dog
Deadline: Midnight February 14th 2021
Independent publishing house, Butcher’s Dog promotes the works of writers based in the UK or ROI. The focus exclusively on promoting poetry where they admit they “read your work completely anonymously and publish established authors alongside previously unpublished and emerging voices.” This is done so through their submission calls which are done so for free. The works that are published are placed into their magazines which showcase a range of poetry styles. If anything, it’s worth looking into, even just to merely glance at the covers of their magazines.
Butcher’s Dog is holding a submission call on a range of the beloved celebratory date, Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing more romantic than words that had been assorted in a way that it told a story of its own through imagery. This is how Butcher’s Dog decides to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
If you are unable to submit anything due to conflict of schedule or lack of motivation, then you can refer to Submission Calls which often updates itself in the future with new poetry based submission calls. Experimenting in poetry can show you a few things in your writing that you may have a particular strength in or a weakness in. Especially if this is out of your comfort zone, I highly encourage it. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different writing styles.
